Changing Worlds - Young Children Becoming Literate

Changing Worlds - Young Children Becoming Literate is a special one day workshop being brought to Winnipeg on April 6th by the Canadian Institute of Reading Recovery and the Manitoba Reading Recovery Teacher Leader Team.

This is an opportunity for Early Childhood Educators, Pre-School and Kindergarten Teachers, Childcare Providers and Parents of Young Children to network with each other and learn from early literacy experts.  This workshop will help in your work with young children to create solid foundation for learning to read and write.

Hear from Miriam Trehearne who has been a classroom teacher, Program Specialist, University Associate, Reading Recovery Liaison Administrator and Literacy Specialist with one of the largest school districts in Canada. Miriam researches literacy best practices, presents at conferences, and has recently written six professional books, including an AEP Award Winner. A regular speaker at International Literacy Association, ECEC and Reading Recovery Conferences, she co-chaired a one-day Institute with renowned literacy expert Regie Routman.  Miriam will be speaking about High-Risk to Success Before Grade One: We Have the Proof!

Choose from 10 different Learning Sessions lead by local literacy experts.  Learn about topics such as:
  • Supporting Early Language and Literacy with Debra Mayer
  • Play Based Learning with Jackie Cunningham
  • Using Props in Storytelling with Brenda Still
  • Language Learning with Jennifer Flight
  • Emerging Writing with Vanda Mitri and Alissa Denbow
Dr. Allyson Matczuk will bring the workshop to a close with her presentation, "What is Possible".  The decisions we make as educators and parents reflect our beliefs and philosophies. Do we know how to provide the best opportunities for each child?  How can we approach learning experiences for young children with an open mind and an open heart?  Understanding that as the children in our care continue to grow and learn, their development is based on the foundations we have provided is critical.  Is it possible to be re-assured that we are doing the best for each child?

This day promises to be some of the best professional learning you have ever participated in.  It will challenge and encourage you in your everyday experiences with young children.

Registration fee of $185 includes all of the conference materials, refreshments and lunch.  There will be great door prizes and additional exhibits along with opportunities to network and learn from colleagues.

More details about the learning sessions and keynote speakers as well as registration is available on our website: www.rrcanada.org/ece-workshop.
